Whimsy children's bedrooms

Apple’s of my eye; Harpa and Hilde have bought much joy since they came earthside. Opting for calm nurseries via neutral tones evolving to fun and whimsy as each exited the cot. These special spaces provide endless hours of creativity as well as a safe place for quiet retreat and contemplation.

Read my tips to create the best space for your cherished little ones.

Colour and Pattern

Embrace colour and pattern, children need to develop and sharpen their eyes, helping with differentiation of shape supporting complex ideas as children mature. A tin of paint goes a long way to alter the feel of a space without fully committing to longer lasting finishes such as curtains, carpet or wallpapers.

The choice to embrace coloured carpet, the burgundy carpet from Supertuft, elevated our mid-century home. As for pattern, the application of wall stickers from Halcyon Nights enhanced the personality of the bedrooms. Additionally, the creation of a custom pendant by the fabulous Ink and Spindle using a custom colourway in the Black Cockatoo fabric and a custom throw cushion from Utopia Goods has provided a sense of play and connection to the beautiful animals we see in our neighbourhood.

The benefits of reading to your child are priceless, we have surrounded our girls with books to enhance their education. Be sure to include a bookshelf and chair for priceless cuddles before bed.

Storage

Sufficient storage is a key element most lack in their homes prior to engagement with an interior designer. Children’s bedrooms are spaces where carefully created storage is hugely beneficial. Consider easy access to much loved toys, whether that is a toy box or basket close by, with robes or walk ins robes providing the best storage solution for clothes, shoes and large items.

Sleep

We chose double sized beds in both our daughters rooms as the space was sufficient, it means less wastage as they grow (less furniture to dispose of) and it encourages connection as they go to sleep as we are there right next to them to comfort. The girls have in the past also enjoyed 'sleepovers' in each others rooms which is achievable with the larger double sized bed.

For example, a breakdown of costs associated with my youngest daughter’s room, excluding design and management fees:

Carpet $1,700

Painting $1,500

S fold blockout Curtains $1,400

Bedding $595

Bedframe (futon style second hand from Gumtree) $150

Custom Bedhead and valance $685

Custom Pendant $210

Electrical install $430

Electrical panel heater $450

Wallstickers $258

Reading chair $1,500

Hegi Design House Monolith side table $POA

Neighbour Hood Studio Picasso lamp $350

Artwork, including commission from Gnashing Teeth $690

Total $9,918

A wonderful exercise decorating our children’s rooms injecting colour and pattern they (and I) love.

Embracing our natural habitat by including Australian flora and fauna in Melbourne’s east. Opting for locally made items where budget allowed supporting my businesses ethos.
