Embracing Colour in Australian Interiors

As we move towards 2025, the world of interior design and colour is evolving, reflecting broader societal shifts and emerging design trends. Dulux, a trusted name in the Australian paint industry, has released its much-anticipated Colour Forecast 2025, showcasing an inspiring palette that resonates with the current mood of creativity, sustainability, and comfort. I had the privilege of hearing first-hand from Andrea Lucena-Orr, Dulux Colour and Communications Manager and Bree Leech, Dulux Colour Forecaster, Designer and Stylist at the beautiful Cosentino Melbourne showroom earlier this month about the forecast and what’s to come next year.

The 2025 forecast centres around three themes, Recollect, Emerge and Still, highlighting how colour can impact our moods and enhance our living spaces. With an emphasis on creating safe sanctuaries in our homes that evoke feelings of calm, warmth, and optimism which in turn generates conversation.

  1. The Recollect colour palette embraces yesteryear, think about colour, furniture and objects from your grandmother’s home and thrift stores, what is old is new again through fresh eyes. This fondness of the past brings warmth and comfort, by mixing interior styles the true sense of you will be injected into your home.

  1. Playful AI has arrived, and you can see this reflected in the Emerge theme. Think about pastel fairy floss, cloudlike shapes in furniture and objects, whimsy and cheerful interiors. Not just for children, adults alike will embrace this theme if colour and softness sparks joy.

  1. Authenticity, connection to nature and peaceful calm colours are the characteristics of the final theme- Still. Sustainability runs deep through this theme with linkage to artistry and craftmanship with consideration of natural materials. Think about soft undyed linens paired with natural stone, you shall live a meaningful and intentional life just a little bit slower.

Tips for implementation of colour into your home:

1.       If you're not ready for a major overhaul, consider using the new colour palettes in smaller spaces, such as a bathroom, power room or the inside of your walk-in robe.

  1. Don't be afraid to combine colours to reflect your style and personality.

  2. Incorporating accessories in the forecast colours such as cushions, vases, rugs, and artwork can help bring the theme to life with texture and shape.

  3. Colour will look different under various lighting conditions. Be sure to test paint samples in your space at different times of the day, colour is always evolving, with the natural Australian light is extremely bright. Be sure to test, test and test again!

  4. Don’t forget about your ceiling, the trend of blending your wall colour to the ceiling colour is finding momentum.

I encourage my clients and homeowners alike to embrace colour as a means of enhancing mood and wellbeing. By thoughtfully integrating these palettes into your home, you can create a space that not only looks great but also feels like a true reflection of your personality and values.
