Entering the world of interior design is such a journey, one that blends creativity, technical expertise, and a deep understanding of how spaces shape human experiences. For aspiring designers, internships offer an invaluable opportunity to bridge the gap between academic learning and real world application. I believe in fostering the next generation of design talent through immersive, collaborative experiences that go beyond the expected. In previous design offices I mentored junior and graduate staff which I thoroughly enjoyed, now I offer this opportunity from my own design studio.
What Makes an Internship Meaningful?
The best internships are more than just an introduction to industry practices they are a launching pad for confidence, innovation, and professional growth.
Hands-on Learning- From spatial planning to material selection, interns participate in the full design process.
Mentorship & Collaboration- With over 15 years in the industry, I dedicate time to guiding interns, providing valuable insights, and fostering their creative instincts.
Exposure to Real Projects- AT JRID, my work crosses different design sectors, namely commercial workplace and private residential, this allows interns to engage with diverse design challenges.
Satisfaction- 100% of my previous interns have been satisfied with their learning.
Conversion- 75% of past interns are now working within the design industry.
"Overall, my time with JRID was incredibly supportive and enriching. Jenni created a welcoming learning environment that encouraged curiosity and growth, and it was an honour to learn from her. I would highly recommend her business to anyone seeking an internship in interior design or looking to renovate their property, her passion and expertise truly stand out." LCI student
Internship Philosophy
Design is more than aesthetics, it’s about storytelling and layering, sustainability and innovation, understanding the clients desires and clear communication with builders. Interns are encouraged to think critically, contribute ideas, and explore how evolving technologies can enhance creativity.
The Experience at JRID
Interns in my studio won’t just observe, they’ll actively contribute. As I am a sole practitioner, the interns need to bring along their own laptop and be available to work from my home studio which is located in Melbourne's east. Whether assisting with concept development, sourcing materials, or supporting a live project, every task is designed to deepen their understanding of the design process. I also champion local manufacturing and sustainable practices, ensuring interns gain insight into the ethical dimensions of design.
"Overall I got so much out of undertaking an internship with JRID. I loved how every day was a new adventure, working on different projects, getting out to site, heading to photoshoots, it made everyday so exciting to be apart of. Jenni is a very supportive and nurturing designer who really wanted the students she took on to thrive. She made the process of being so new to the industry really welcoming and approachable, and made it such an enjoyable and valuable experience." LCI student
The internship program has welcomed a diverse range of aspiring designers, including students from RMIT and LCI Melbourne, talented high school creatives, and professionals pivoting into interior design, such as a primary school teacher.

How to Apply
I seek interns who are passionate, curious, and eager to grow. If you’re interested in an internship in my studio please send a brief introduction highlighting what excites you about interior design and any relevant experience and schooling. Applications are open year-round with flexible opportunities to accommodate different academic schedules with preference to a day a week for a term.
"Day to day I was exposed to a range of different aspects of the business, which allowed me to get the most of my time and gain more diverse experience." Alyssa RMIT student @akb_interiors
In my next blog I shall explore the Milan Design Fair/ Salone del Mobile Milano, watching eagerly from home.
